Why we LOVE winter and other controversial topics

A message from Rhea Allen

Although the first day of winter is still over a month away, there’s no denying that the seasons, they are a-changin’!

This year has given us a combination of time conundrums; on the one hand, it has druuuuuuuuuug by at the rate of an unmotivated snail, and on the other hand, it has left us feeling like we blinked and it was gone! But despite all the turmoil and concerns happening on a human level this year, mother nature has paid no mind and has decided to give us beautiful fall colors and crisp, clear mornings anyway.

Every month has provided us with a new opportunity to experience our traditions a little differently, including football, hunting, camping, and yes, homeschooling! Our household has had to adjust, absorb, pivot, and move just like everybody else’s, and that’s why I am thinking about winter, and how deserving of love it really is!

Yes, endless summer would be nice, but how would we REALLY appreciate it, if it weren’t for the giant reset button that is winter? The cold, the short days, the holidays we pack into just two short months that brings us all together. The scarves, the pumpkin spice, the gifts, the food (the weight gain!) the togetherness, and intensity of it all.

In a lot of ways, this year has been like a social winter for us. We have had to hit a reset button, dress differently (masks, for one), and find new ways to connect, entertain ourselves, and somehow stay together through it all. We love winter because it gives us an opportunity to focus, to experience new things, to rest, and to get ready to change. We accept the bitter, biting cold, the dark, and the ice because we know it’s just a cocoon; a place where beautiful things can grow!

I hope that this upcoming holiday season brings you gratitude, peace, connectedness, and a new appreciation for the beautiful season of giving and growth that is just around the corner.
